Our primary aim for veterans is to offer the sevices provided by the H.O.U.S.E. programs plus more specific assitance in specialized areas such as:

In the last 2 years we have seen the veteran population of our resident client load increase from 10% to over 50%. An experianced V.A. person has been added to our staff to assist veterans

The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. and the Veteran

With a current population made up of more than 50% homeless veterans, The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. has gone to great lengths to meet the specific needs of its veteran client/residents.  In conjunction with the Veterans Administration Medical Centers in Fayetteville, AR and Mt. Vernon, MO, each honorably discharged veteran entering residency at The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. has his medical and mental health needs assessed by in-house veteran’s representatives and VA Homeless Outreach Social Workers, and is immediately assigned to a primary care medical team.  After an initial examination and evaluation by the assigned primary care physician, all follow-up and specialty care appointments are scheduled as required, and any needed medications are then provided to veterans via mail at no cost to the veteran.

Another service available only to the veteran client/residents at The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. is inclusion in a Health Care for Homeless Veterans Contract that has been negotiated between The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. and the Fayetteville, AR, VA Medical Center.  Under the provisions of this contract, ten veterans at a time are subsidized by the VA Medical Center so that they can prepare themselves to transition to a community setting.  The newest feature of this contract - one that we are very excited about - is a provision that provides veterans who are on contract with a one-time-only dental benefit.  This means that if the qualifying veteran needs a single cavity filled or if he needs every tooth pulled and a complete set of dentures, whatever is required at the time of that one-time-only benefit examination will be performed at no cost to the veteran.

Still, we at The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. recognize that the needs of our veterans far outweigh even their physical, mental health and dental problems.  It has been said that there are no atheists in foxholes, but the sad fact of the matter is that some of these same veterans - who at one time may have felt so very close to their Higher Power while serving on battlefields around the world - have lost that conscious contact in a more recent battle they have been losing to drugs and alcohol.  For this reason, as with all our other client/residents, a strong spiritual – not religious – program is available to our veterans. It has been our experience at The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. that with “veterans only” residences available, those who share like experiences are better able to relate to each other and help each other to achieve and maintain sobriety.

Many other services and benefits are also available to veterans, and those who are interested in specific veterans programs are encouraged to contact one of The H.O.U.S.E. Inc. Veteran’s Representatives at (417) 623-0392.
